Located in the southern part of the old “Monte” quarter, Piazza Castello takes its name from the Aragonese castle standing there. Opposite it there is an elegant line of patrician mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries (Verlardita, Roccazzella, Starrabba).
The castle was built at the end of the fourteenth century and was for a long time, the residence of King Martino of Aragona. It is square in plan, with square lookout towers that overlook the large valley below. Of the original three floors, only two remain today.
